Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)

Provide emergency response for pipeline-related emergencies on a 24-hour, 7-day/week basis by utilizing conference bridge equipment and software systems, including a computerized notification system and mapping software, for NNG's pipeline system.

Typical Duties

Analyze emergency telephone calls that are received in the Operations Communications Center for severity of emergency, location of emergency and coordinate with appropriate parties for handling the emergency.

Make decisions in a real-time environment with regard to public safety and the safety of Northern Natural Gas personnel, contractor personnel and equipment.

Utilize the Northern Natural Gas pipeline grid to assist with emergency response coordination.

Coordinate communications for emergencies affecting pipeline operations.

Perform call outs for emergency line locates, gas control operational requests and routine operational calls.

Monitor and assist with maintaining employee database for all personnel who may need to be contacted in an emergency situation.

Update and maintain contact list of key and critical emergency response personnel for outside local agencies throughout Northern Natural Gas.

Administer teleconferencing bridge used by all Northern Natural Gas employees and all designated emergency response personnel.

Participate in simulated emergency drills and communication tests with field teams and Northern Natural Gas regional safety and environmental specialists.

Educate field teams, management, non-operations employees and public agencies on the role and operational aspects of the operations communications center.

This position will train with gas control in order to perform the following duties: Monitor the pipeline systems of Northern Natural Gas via the supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA). Communicate with field operation personnel to keep abreast of situations requiring action of assistance, i.e., loss of production, gas quality problems and data acquisition problems, horsepower and pipeline outages.

Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. 

 

Qualifications

 

High school diploma, high school equivalency or equivalent education. Associate's degree, related major or equivalent related work-experience a plus.

Two years of operations experience with an interstate pipeline company, compressor stations and mechanical equipment desirable.

Must be able to communicate well in an emergency or crisis situation with field operations personnel, Northern Natural Gas management and outside agencies/media.

Ability to interact professionally and confidently with all levels of management, public officials and agencies.

Ability to react quickly and make immediate decisions in a high stress situation which could include personal injury or loss of life.

Ability to plan and organize work during an emergency situation.

Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with little or no direction.

Above average computer knowledge/skills and proficiency with Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.

Controls and measurement experience a plus.

Pipeline flow study modeling experience, a plus.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.

Position requires working a 12-hour rotating shift (unit provides 24 hour, 365-day service).
